The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI)

The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is an initiative whose details were announced by HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in October 2021. SGI aims at promoting efforts to enhance quality of life and protect future generations in the Kingdom, through harmonizing all sustainability plans, maximizing renewable energy utilization, reducing emissions and fighting climate change.
The first set of these initiatives includes reducing CO2 emissions by 278 million tons per annum by 2030, planting more than 450 million trees, restoring 8 million hectares of degraded land and creating new protected areas.  It also includes the Kingdom’s intention to join the Global Oceans Alliance, the Global Methane Pledge, the Alliance to Eliminate Plastic Waste in Oceans and Beaches and the Sports for Climate Action Agreement and establishing a global center for sustainable tourism and a nonprofit foundation to explore the seas and oceans.

The first set represents investments of more than 700 billion riyals, contributing to the development of the green economy and the creation of new quality jobs, and offering the private sector huge investment opportunities.
